Bakery plants can reduce their energy bills and greenhouse gases by implementing energy-saving measures throughout their manufacturing processes ranging from lighting and electrical upgrades to ensuring that motors are properly cabled and ventilated, reports the Bakery Bazar blog.

The article provides several tips and ideas on how to cut energy use. As an example, conventional tube lights and bulbs can be replaced with low-wattage CFLs that are available in 18/20 watts with good lux ratings, together with occupancy sensors, to reduce electricity consumption.

Other tips show how to save energy by choosing the right air compressor and properly installing air conditioning and refrigeration units. Other tips cover ovens, pumps, cooling towers and fuels.

For instance, proper insulation of chilled water pipes can keep energy costs down.

Thanks to federal stimulus funds for energy efficiency, some bakeries are moving ahead with their energy-saving projects. As an example, Kaplan’s New Model Bakery Inc. in Philadelphia has been awarded $9,633 for the purchase and installation of an energy-efficient oven to conserve energy, reports Examiner.com.
