Solar Plays Role in Haiti Relief Efforts

light11910Solar-powered phones and lighting are on their way to help relief efforts in Haiti, along with solar-powered audible bibles.

Sol, a provider of solar lighting systems, is donating $300,000 and is organizing relief efforts in Haiti that will help hospitals, food distribution centers and relief camps to operate after dusk, according to a press release.

Sol expects the total donation to exceed $400,000 with assistance from suppliers and a solar light matching program. The company is with working with Florida Congressman Rooney’s Stuart office, several relief agencies and government agencies to transport the solar lights from Florida and get them installed in Haiti as quickly as possible.

Several of Sol’s suppliers have also donated time and materials including Alliance Composites Inc., C & L Technologies, Citizen Electronics, Haze Battery U.S.A., Karl Lust and SPOSTO Interactive, allowing Sol to increase the number of solar light systems that will be available to the relief efforts.

In addition, one thousand solar-powered phones are being sent to Haiti by Intivation and Digicel to help earthquake survivors and to help aid workers communicate, reports eWeekEurope.

Digicel, the largest mobile network operator in the Caribbean, has provided $10 million in $5 credits to its one million customers in Haiti, reports eWeekEurope. It is also using two private plans to transport goods including the solar phones to Port au Prince, according to the article.

A group in the United States also is sending about 600 solar-powered audible bibles that can broadcast the holy scriptures in Haitian Creole to 300 people at a time, reports Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).
