Starbucks is sponsoring the Betacup design competition that is looking for a solution to unrecyclable paper coffee cups, reports Core77.

According to Betacup, 58 billion paper coffee cups are thrown away, unrecycled each year.

Starbucks is sponsoring the competition as part of its target goal to supply 100 percent of its coffee in reusable or recyclable cups by 2015.

Other contest sponsors include Denuo, community management experts, and Jovoto, a collaboration community for creatives.

Case prizes total $20,000 for the most innovative ideas.

The contest launches April 1 and closes on June 15.

In 2008, the chain launched its Vivanno beverages with a new plastic cup that has less of an environmental impact than the original plastic cups, which is one step towards meeting its goal to have 100 percent of its cups reusable or recyclable by 2015.

They are actually making some good work by conducting Betacup design competition .

Still wonder why Starbucks cannot serve ceramic cups to those guests staying in the shop. Would be a better coffee product and a clear step towards a more sustainable approach by simply avoiding all the waste.
