energysavingsA new Costco/Lowe’s-anchored retail center in Los Angeles achieves 40 percent in water savings, compared to the baseline, said Vanessa Delgado of Primestor Development, which was involved in building the 343,000-square-foot center.

The Plaza Pacoima center, which upon completion will seek a LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, is about 13.9 percent more efficient in electricity use than the baseline for similar facilities, which translates to a 16.6 percent cost savings, according to the LEED compliance documents.

The building is 14.4 percent more efficient than the baseline for natural gas use, which translates into a 10 percent cost savings.

The estimated annual cost for electricity (918,860 kWh) is almost $100,000, while natural gas (1,461 therms) is estimated to cost $13,533.

Delgado said the main energy saving features of the complex are:

– the use of skylights to minimize interior lighting requirements

– high performance storefront glazing

– improved wall and ceiling insulation

Costco has put 2.4 MW of renewable energy to use at other Southern California locations, but there are no such plans for this facility, Delgado said.
