PepsiCo and Coca-Cola have announced separate recycling initiatives designed to boost the recycling rate of beverage cans and bottles across the nation.

As an example, PepsiCo and Waste Management have signed a multi-year agreement to support the Dream Machine recycling initiative designed around PepsiCo’s goal of increasing the U.S. beverage container recycling rate from 34 percent to 50 percent by 2018, reports American Recycler.

Dream Machine kiosks are touted as the first interactive recycling receptacles that use online and on-street technologies that allow consumers to recycle PET and aluminum containers on-the-go. Consumers can redeem points for each bottle or can they recycle in the kiosk at www.greenopolis.com.

This recycling initiative will place thousands of new recycling kiosks in public venues such as gas stations, stadiums, and public parks. In addition to more than fifty machines being rolled out in Southern California, Rite Aid will be one of the first national retailers to join the program, starting with 150 kiosks in its North Carolina locations, says American Recycler.

PepsiCo has also entered into a partnership with Keep America Beautiful (KAB) to encourage community involvement in the initiative. The program will provide funding to the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV).

Coca-Cola is supporting its recycling efforts by sponsoring a recycling grant program that is designed to boost recycling across the country. In a partnership with KAB, Coca-Cola awarded 82 grant winners under its spring 2010 Recycling Bin Grant Program, selected from a field of more than 1,700 applications, reports American Recycler.

Recipients were chosen by KAB based on a number of criteria, including where bins will have the most impact on recovering beverage containers, long-term program sustainability, and recycling education and promotion, says American Recycler.

In addition to recycling initiatives, both Pepsi and Coke have been reducing the amount of plastic used in their bottles over the past few years.
