Thousands of Floridians are still owed solar rebates, although the fund to pay them has run dry, according to a report in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. According to the report, The Florida Solar Rebate Program, which was created in 2006 to reimburse home and business owners who install solar panels, was set to expire on June 30. But this year the Florida state legislature failed to approve funds to pay for the program, and has received 10,000 applications since it ran out of money last June.

Gov. Charlie Crist may include a proposal to fund the program in an upcoming special session of the legislature that was called to ban offshore drilling. The program offers a four dollar rebate per watt of electricity generated by a solar panel, up to $20,000 per homeowner. Businesses were eligible for up to $100,000 in rebates. Gov. Crist has requested $10 million to continue to fund the program.

New Jersey recently experienced a similar problem when Gov. Chris Christie took $158 million from the state’s Clean Energy Fund to cover the state’s $11 billion budget deficit, leading to 1,000 people lining up outside the Office of Clean Energy on May 3. The Office exhausted its rebates in a single day.
