‘Nuclear Sludge’ Candy Recalled for Lead Contamination
Circle City Marketing and Distribution of Indianapolis, doing business as Candy Dynamics, is recalling all flavors of the 0.7 oz (20 g) bars, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said.
A test by the California Department of Public Health of the cherry version of the bars indicated lead levels of 0.24 parts per million (ppm), more than twice the FDA‚Äôs allowed level of 0.1 ppm.
The FDA said the level of lead in the bars could cause health problems, especially for infants, small children and pregnant women. No illnesses have yet been reported in connection with the product, the FDA said.
The company decided to recall all lots of the product distributed since the bar‚Äôs launch in 2007, ‚Äúout of an abundance of caution‚ÄĚ, the FDA said.
The bars, which come in cherry, sour apple and blue raspberry, are imported from Pakistan and were distributed nationwide in stores and through mail order. Anyone in posession of the candies should call the company, the FDA said.
Circle City is sending recall notices to its direct customers.
The distributor sells other products under the Toxic Waste brand ‚Äď which it bills as ‚Äúhazardously sour candy‚ÄĚ ‚Äď but none of these have been recalled.
The manufacturer‚Äôs 30-count, 80-count and 120-count bags of Nuclear Sludge miniatures are still for sale on the company website.
The company also has an Environment page on its site, which displays the seal of the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce‚Äôs Green Business Initiative.
