Biomedical Firm Cuts Per-Unit Water, Energy, Carbon

The biomedical company CSL has achieved reductions in environmental impact across all its per-unit indicators, according to its second annual corporate responsibility report (pdf).

CSL, an Australian company that has over 10,000 employees working in 27 countries, said it achieved a 20 percent cut in per-unit water consumption for vaccine production.

CSL Group develops and manufactures vaccines and plasma protein biotherapies.

Energy consumption per unit of vaccine and unit of plasma produced both fell again last year, as did greenhouse gas emissions per unit of each product type.

CSL also said that it concluded an enterprise-wide climate change risk assessment, which confirmed that its exposure to climate change risks over the next 25 years is low.

But greenhouse gas emissions for manufacturing facilities went up by two percent to 164 kilotons of CO2 in 2009/10.

Energy emissions went up by 1.6 percent, but water consumption and waste generation were more stable, with increases of 0.7 and 0.5 percent.
