New research from California, Oregon and Washington shows that homes with LEED or other third-party energy efficiency certifications sell faster and net higher prices than other homes, The Los Angeles Times reported.  One study, by the Earth Advantage Institute, found that new homes with certifications sold for 8 percent more on average than noncertified homes and existing houses with certifications sold for 30 percent more in the six-county Portland, Ore., metropolitan area.

The California State Assembly passed a bill on Monday that would allow companies to register as benefit corporations, and the bill will now be considered by Gov. Jerry Brown.  A benefit corporation is a new legal class of corporation that is required to meet higher social and environmental performance standards.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has become the first state in the U.S. to accept European Union standards for emissions from pellet boilers, Biomass Power and Thermal Magazine reported on Monday.  Maine’s rules on outdoor pellet wood boilers allows the department to accept boiler certification programs other than the one used by the Environmental Protection Agency, if deemed scientifically valid.

The University of Southern California announced that it will receive the first-ever LEED platinum accreditation for student housing this week. The university’s new West 27th Place (pictured) is on public transportation routes, offers preferred parking for fuel efficient cars, and contains recycled flooring.

Vedanta Aluminium’s Lanjigarh Unit plant in Orissa became the first mining company in India to receive accreditation for its energy management system for ISO 50001:2011 from the British Standards Institution.

MDM Development’s Wells Fargo Center, the office component of the large-scale Metropolitan Miami project, has received LEED gold certification, according to The Florida Real Estate Journal.

CardsMadeEasy, a London-based printer of business cards, leaflets and labels, announced that it has become an ISO 14001 certified printer.
