Compliance & Standards Briefing: RoHS Lead Exemption, WEEE Compromise, LEED Platinum Luxury
The European Union on Monday added a new exemption for lead to the RoHS directive on toxic substances in electronic goods, ENDS Europe reported. The new exemption appeared in the RoHS official journal following recommendations made in July.
Naked Home Village, a $31 million luxury resort in the tiny Chinese farming village of Shanjiuwu, will become the world’s first luxury retreat to win LEED Platinum accreditation, The Wall Street Journal reported. The retreat with 70 different buildings will be added to a very short list of LEED certificated buildings in China; as of March, there were just eight.
Safetec Compliance Systems, Inc. and ChemADVISOR, Inc. will partner to provide regulatory and compliance services for chemical users, the two companies announced. Safetec customers will gain access to ChemADVISOR’s LOLI database, while ChemADVISOR customers will be able to use Safetec’s platform for distribution management of material safety data sheets to support OSHA’s GHS transition requirements.
The Polish presidency of the European Union has floated a compromise in negotiations between nations over the revised WEEE directive, ENDs Europe reported. Poland’s solution would compel producers of electronic waste to comply with definitions set at both the national and EU level.
Horne Engineering Services, Treasury Advisory Services and SMARTBIM on Monday announced a new partnership, Energy Advisory Services, that will market “turnkey deep energy retrofit and energy efficiency” expertise and LEED consulting to government and private customers. Turnkey deep energy retrofits will be implemented in existing buildings based on comprehensive ASHRAE 90.1-compliant energy audits and digital modeling of a building and its energy profile.
Enso-Atlanta, a 325-unit multi-family apartment complex, has become the first apartment community in the Southeast to achieve LEED Gold certification, the project’s developers announced. The complex includes a cistern capable of harvesting 76,000 gallons of rainwater, and high-efficiency air conditioning.
EcoATM, a San Diego start-up company that is developing retail kiosks that buy and recycle used consumer electronics announced that it has received ISO 14001:2004 certification. Also announcing ISO:14001 certification was Emrill, a facilities management company in the United Arab Emirates.
