Through the end of 2010 Eli Lilly and Company reduced the amount of waste sent to landfills by about 50 percent and reduced its water intake by more than 30 percent against a 2007 baseline.

This means that the pharmaceutical company has achieved two of its three environmental goals ahead of schedule.

The goals were established for a five-year period beginning in 2008, using 2007 performance as a baseline. The company had aimed for a 40 percent reduction in waste to landfills and a 25 percent reduction in water intake by 2013.

Lilly says that it is still on track to achieve its third goal of a 15 percent improvement in energy efficiency and a 15 percent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Through 2010, the company has improved the energy efficiency of its operations by almost 12 percent while greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced by more than 9 percent.

A report out in August condemned the pharmaceutical industry for being “all over the map” in terms of their environmental goals and transparency.

Green Research found that major pharmaceutical companies have, on average, between five and six public environmental sustainability goals. AstraZeneca had the most with 12. Merck had the least with one.

The report also criticized the industry leaders for setting few environmental goals for their supply chains.
