Seafood supplier Fishery Products International is switching to sustainable packaging made from 100 percent recycled fibers.

The new packaging is produced through a partnership of three companies based in Nova Scotia: Maritime Paper Products Ltd., a manufacturer of sustainable packaging; Scotia Recycling, which reclaims used cartons and recycles them and Minas Basin, a paper mill that makes 100 percent recycled linerboard.

The company has completely converted its packaging for U.S.-produced items, and is in the process of completing the conversion for items produced overseas.

PET container recycling rose to 29 percent in 2010, up from 28 percent in 2009.

This is the seventh straight year that the rate has increased according to the 2010 Report on Post Consumer PET Container Recycling Activity.

The report is published jointly by the National Association for PET Container Resources, the Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers and the PET Resin Association.

U.S. demand for flexible packaging – such a that used to package bagged salads in grocery stores – will exceed $18 billion in 2015, according to a report by the Freedonia Group Inc.

“Converted Flexible Packaging” says the increased demand will be driven by retailers increasingly demanding more eco-friendly and less-expensive  packaging.
