Drug company Shasun Pharma Solutions’ wastewater plant in Newcastle upon Tyne, U.K., has installed Hach Lange sensor equipment.

The facility is reporting reduced maintenance and more accurate and more reliable monitoring since moving to the new sensors, Plant Engineer reports.

Hach Lange products are used in the plant’s activated sludge process to detect dissolved oxygen in wastewater from Shasun and third parties. The new sensors allow instantaneous control of the amount of oxygen in the sludge and can go without recalibration for over a year, the web site reports.

“We do not always know what is coming down the line [from third parties]. That is why we need to be able to respond quickly. Overdosing oxygen would kill the bugs, while underdosing may cause other problems,” wastewater facility manager Craig Goodman told the web site.

In October, Siemens launched specialty media that removes regulated metals from industrial wastewater, groundwater and storm runoff water.

SCU Trace Metal Removal Media removes trace levels of metals such as copper, zinc, lead, mercury, cadmium, trivalent chromium, nickel and others from complex wastewater to levels the company says are not possible with traditional ion exchange resins.
