The R.A.S.E.R. HD modular data center unit from Elliptical Mobile Solutions (EMS) is capable of maintaining very low values – 1.03 or better – for power usage effectiveness (PUE), according to recently released test results, the company reported.

GKK Works conducted the testing on R.A.S.E.R. HD, a rack-level, container-based data center, saying in its whitepaper that given an IT load to test, the system could see PUEs of 1.03 and better. GKK Works said that the result could be a major breakthrough.

Overall, the data industry has moved from an average PUE of well over 2.5 in the mid 90s to a typical 1.4 in 2011 – while in certain cases Google, Yahoo and Facebook have reported PUE between 1.07 and 1.13.

In addition to the IT big names, a recent survey from Green Grid found that about half of all data centers are pursuing a more energy efficient chilling strategy, but pointed to the difficulty with retrofitting existing facilities. The industry is increasingly looking at modularity for the ability to expand capacity quickly based on demand.

The R.A.S.E.R. HD unit can provide solutions for eliminating chiller systems altogether, which represents a substantial opportunity to reduce energy use – the chillers used to cool IT equipment represent 33 to 40 percent of a data center’s energy cost, GKK Works said.

According to EMS, the unit cools IT equipment using water temperatures as warm as 85° F, and the design features a closed loop cooling methodology. The rack and heat exchanger work within the enclosure, establishing its own microclimate.

The R.A.S.E.R. HD can be installed indoors or outdoors and each unit can handle redundant IT loads from 20 to 80 kW. The testing used a 23kW load bank, EMS said, and was conducted outdoors in Phoenix, Arizona, when temperatures ranged from 85 to 103° F.
