Chemical company BioAmber and Japanese conglomerate Mitsui & Co are to build bio-succinic acid and 1, 4 butanediol production facilities aimed at making ingredients for sustainable cosmetics.

The deal sees investment in a plant in Ontario, Canada, that is initially expected to produce 17,000 metric tons of the acid and 23,000 metric tons of butanediol, or BDO, reports Cosmetics Design.

A production facility in Thailand – expected to start production in 2014 – also forms part of the deal, as does a possible third plant in either Brazil or North America, if funding allows.

Combined, the three plants should be able to produce 123,000 tons of BDO and 165,000 tons of bio-succinic acid, the web site reports.

Earlier this month, Cosmetics Design reported that NSF International and the American Chemical Society Green Chemistry Institute have developed an American National Standard aimed at defining the environmental and human health hazards associated with a chemical product and its manufacturing process.

In October, Biogro, a New Zealand company, became that country’s first certifier of “natural” cosmetic products after receiving its accreditation from France-based Natrue.
