Sustainable Packaging Brief: Salazar, Hilex, Georgia-Pacific, Mucell, EDV
Salazar Packaging and Globe Guard Products has a new design for a rack-hangable container, the Eco Hanging Pack. Targeting the manufacturers of soft goods, in particular green product and fabric manufacturers who may not want to use any form of plastic packaging, the Eco Hanging Pack can be made of micro flute corrugated or almost any grade or type of paper board.
The white or natural colored packaging can be fully printed on all sides, can hang on a rack or stand for point of purchase display or shelves, and can included a custom-sized display window, Salazar said.
Twenty-five packages have earned recognition in the 2012 Flexible Packaging Achievement Awards from the Flexible Packaging Association. Hilex Poly Co. received an award for its “Bag 2 Bag” recycling program, a plastic bag and films recycling infrastructure that makes it easier for consumers to recycle their used plastic bags, wraps and films.
Orville Redenbacher’s Popcorn Pop Up Bowl earned the highest achievement award, gold for packaging excellence and technical innovation. Other companies recognized for packaging include Bengay’s Zero Degrees in a flexible stand-up pouch; Swanson’s Flavor Boost Sachets for liquid broth in single-use pre-measured portions; the Dip & Squeeze dual-function package for Heinz ketchup; and the Pocket Shots stand-up pouch for alcoholic beverages.
Georgia-Pacific vice president of strategy and category effectiveness John Mulcahy says recycled paper manufacturers are gaining opportunities to recover and process papers that were not previously economical. In Packaging Digest and Pira International’s third article in a series of discussions ahead of March’s Sustainability in Packaging 2012 conference, Mulcahy looks at value in the waste stream as the demand for recovered paper is increasing in the global market. Mulcahy points out that the supply of recovered paper has not increased – despite significant increases in industry recovery rates due to cyclical and structural changes in paper markets.
EDV Packaging and Mucell Extrusion have signed an exclusive agreement to produce foamed polypropylene barrier sheets for food packaging within Europe. The sheets, expected to be commercially available by the second half of 2012, combine more than 30 patents from Mucell Extrusion, MIT, and The Dow Chemical Company, and reduce packaging weight, Packaging Europe reports.
