Standards & Compliance Briefing: Window Efficiency Rating, Energy Star, Dexos1 Engine Oil, Green Meetings
The Federal Trade Commission has a new Shopping for Windows infographic that illustrates how the National Fenestration Rating Council’s energy-rating label measures the energy efficiency of windows. The label shows the ratings for the U-factor, visible transmittance, solar heat gain coefficient, and air leakage condensation resistance, the FTC said.
Eight new ASTM International standards will provide event planners and their suppliers with specific guidelines and performance metrics for creating environmentally sustainable events. The standards, which have been in development since 2007, cover destinations, exhibits, transportation, audio visual (A/V) and production, communication and marketing materials, onsite offices, food and beverage and meeting venues, ASTM said. The news follows the Global Reporting Initiative’s publication of event sustainability guidance last month.
The EPA will begin to assign the Energy Star designation to qualifying swimming pool pumps, with the certification available as early as August 2012. The EPA plans to include single-, multi- and variable-speed models, writes Pool & Spa News.
Ten school districts in Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska have been recognized as Energy Star Leaders, the EPA said. Energy Star Leaders have improved building efficiency of all their buildings by at least 10 percent, or consistently rank in the top 25 percent for efficient energy use.
Analysis firm Neustar has earned LEED Commercial Interiors certification for its new headquarters in Sterling, Va., the company said. Neustar worked with the design firm Interplan of Washington D.C., to incorporate strategies for energy use, lighting, water and material use into the overall building design.
SafetyKleen’s EcoPower engine oil – made from recycled and re-refined oil – has met the Dexos1 engine oil specification, and is the first reclaimed engine oil to earn the General Motors-developed oil standard. The specification was designed to increase fuel efficiency, extend the life of emissions systems and produce fewer emissions in GM vehicles, Safety-Kleen said.
Quality assurance and safety firm Intertek has been accredited by the IECEE to issue IEC Certification Body reports for concentrated photovoltaic modules meeting IEC 62108. Intertek’s Lake Forest, Calif., laboratory may now audit photovoltaic manufacturers for safety and performance testing and give certifications, the company said.
GlobalGAP (Good Agricultural Practice) – a group that sets voluntary standards for the certification of agricultural products around the globe – has approved the use of Harmonized Standards as the basis of its checklist for U.S. food safety under GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) level certification audits, Refrigerated Transporters reports.
