Sears, LG, Xcel, Lowe’s Among Energy Star Winners

Sears Holdings Corporation has won the Energy Star Corporate Commitment Award in recognition of what the EPA-run program calls its superior achievements in energy efficiency.

Sears won the top Energy Star award for achievements that included increasing the amount of Energy Star-qualified decorative lighting products, power tools and washing machines it sells and reducing company-wide energy consumption by 6.5 kBtu per square foot, representing a 4.3-percent improvement in energy efficiency in 2011.

The company also improved energy efficiency by more than 10 percent across its entire portfolio of Kmart buildings through 2011, Energy Star says.

Over 100 other companies were recognized with an award, including home improvement retailer Lowe’s, utility Xcel Energy and LG Electronics.

Lowe’s won an Award for Sustained Excellence as recognition of the thousands of Energy Star-qualified products available across the store, along with renewable energy products and electric vehicle chargers. The company was also recognized for using its nationwide training program to build knowledge of Energy Star among its more than 234,000 corporate, distribution center and in-store employees.

Xcel won an Award for Sustained Excellence for its continued delivery of its Energy Star-certified new homes program. Key accomplishments in 2011 include recruiting an additional 12 builders and two rating companies in Minnesota for a total of more than 125 builders and 16 rating companies actively participating in its the New Homes program. The top 10 builders in the state all participate in the program, Energy Star says.

Consumer electronics firm LG’s North American arm won an Energy Star Partner of the Year award in recognition of of its commitment to Energy Star-qualified products and employee education programs.

The company increased the sales of its Energy Star-qualified products by nearly 30 percent over 2010 and produced 406 such appliances and electronics models in 2011, 21 more than the number qualified in 2010, Energy Star says.
