NASA’s newest building at Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, Calif., – called the Sustainability Base – is one of the nation’s greenest, NASA said. The building was designed to achieve LEED Platinum status, and is under consideration for certification. NASA calls Sustainability Base an “intuitive” facility, designed to anticipate and react to changes in sunlight, temperature, wind and occupancy. The building can optimize its performance automatically, in real time, in response to internal and external changes, NASA said.
The Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel in downtown Arlington, Va., has been awarded LEED Gold certification, a standard shared with the adjoining property, Residence Inn Arlington Capital View. The Renaissance is one of three gold-certified hotels in the state and one of only 40 in the U.S. The facility has on-site carbon dioxide monitoring, uses low-emitting materials and energy-efficient glass, and its landscaping reduces water usage by half, Marriott International said.
Washington Gas Energy Services’ residential and small-commercial 50 percent and 100 percent wind power products have been Green-e Energy certified. Syracuse, N.Y.-based Carrier said that its Evergreen 23XRV chiller has surpassed ASHRAE 90.1 standards for energy efficiency by up to 44 percent with integrated part load values as low as 0.299 kW/Ton. The water-cooled, variable-speed screw chiller uses non-ozone-depleting HFC-134a refrigerant and Foxfire compression technology, Carrier said.
North American design firm Stantec has achieved company-wide certification to the ISO 14001 standard. The certification audits were conducted by third-party BSI Management Systems, Stantec said.
Bournemouth Airport, on England’s south coast, has been registered to ISO 14001 with SGS United Kingdom after implementing programs to minimize waste, recycle materials, reduce the risk of pollution and be more energy efficient. Bournemouth is one of only a few U.K. airports to achieve the standard, The Daily Echo said.
