Hasbro to Improve Product-to-Package Ratio by 15%
Average product-to-package ratios will improve by about 15 percent for products included in the initiative, Hasbro says. The greener packaging will hit store shelves sometime this year.
The new range of packaging will include redesigned disposable boxes and blister packs. Hasbro hope the initiative will streamline its manufacturing processes and reduce its use of natural resources. As an example, a more efficient package design for the 2013 My Little Pony assortment pack is expected to reduce the size of shipping containers by 20 percent, creating transportation efficiencies.
Packaging that serves the dual purpose of long-term storage, such as game boxes, is not included in the initiative, Hasbro says.
Reducing total packaging size is Hasbro’s most recent effort in a series of sustainable packaging initiatives. In 2011, Hasbro announced plans to eliminate PVC from all new core toy and game packaging beginning in 2013. Also in 2011, Hasbro replaced all wire ties in its packages with ties made from paper rattan or bamboo mix, and increased the proportion of its board packaging and paper sourced from recycled or sustainable forestry practices to 75 percent. By 2015, Hasbro plans to increase that ratio to 90 percent.
In mid 2011, Greenpeace accused Hasbro – along with Lego, Mattel and Disney – of using packaging material sourced from trees cleared out of the Indonesian rainforest by paper firm Asia Pulp & Paper. The environmental group criticized a subsequent commitment by Hasbro to stop its suppliers using APP products, saying the firm had fallen “back on a weak sustainability announcement made in 2010.”
The Ethisphere Institute named Hasbro one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies in March 2012.
