Five Denihan Hotels Install EcoSmart EMS
The Benjamin (pictured) and five other Manhattan boutique hotels can expect upwards of 30 percent energy savings by using Telkonet’s EcoSmart energy management platform, according to the technology developer.
Denihan Hospitality Group selected the cloud-based system for The Benjamin, Affinia Gardens, Affinia Dumont, Affinia Shelburne and Affinia 50. The in-room energy management systems include intelligent thermostats, occupancy sensors, door contacts and plug load control devices.
In January, Telkonet won a contract to provide energy management solutions in 10 Southern California-based hospitality properties through Pacific Energy Services & Facilities Inc. And in August 2011, it installed its EcoSmart platform at Cornerstone Real Estate Advisers’ Westin Alexandria Hotel in Alexandria, Va. At that hotel, the EcoSmart platform controls water source heat pumps in each of the 341 rooms and seven suites.
The Denihan properties join a host of other hotels implementing energy saving and efficiency measures. The Hilton New York, Manhattan’s largest hotel, installed a green roof and cogeneration system last month. Its fuel cell, which sits atop the building’s fifth floor roof, won the hotel the 2008-2009 Environmental Recognition Program “Green Street” Award from the Avenue of the Americas Association.
And in April, Marriott announced that GE Lighting LED retrofits at its Bethesda. Md., headquarters will reduce electricity use by 66 percent, and save more than $120,000 in annual combined energy and maintenance costs—although last week, the hotel chain ranked last in an energy efficiency study of 75 companies. Last November, Marriott and Constellation Energy agreed to develop over 23 MW of load response capability across more than 250 of the hotel’s properties in the mid-Atlantic, New York, New England, Texas and California.
