Fleet Roundup: BMW GM Breakup, BMW Toyota Hookup, Volvo, Citroen C-Zero
Volvoâ€™s “I-See” system, which captures kinetic energy created when a truck brakes and uses that energy to propel the truck, can reduce fuel consumption by up to five percent and will be on the market in 2013, the company says. A truck covering 140,000 kilometers a year can save about 1,000 liters of fuel annually with I-See, according to Volvo.
E-mobility company VitaeMobility has partnered with power and automation technology group ABB to install 50 Terra Smart Connect fast chargers at multiple locations throughout Belgium, beginning in late July. The companies say ABBâ€™s Terra Smart Connect is the only smart connected charging station on the market that supports EV charging for company fleets in 30 to 120 minutes.
BMW has ended talks with General Motors about cooperating on fuel cells for vehicles, Bloomberg reports. The two companies had been discussing a fuel-cell technology collaboration since last December.
The BMW-GM breakup is likely related to the German luxury carmakerâ€™s expanding partnership with Toyota, which will now include hybrid powertrains and lightweight design, Reuters reports. BMW and Toyota first signed a memorandum of understanding for collaborative research on next-generation lithium-ion batteries for electric cars last December, and agreed to discuss other collaborative projects.
Microvastâ€™s ultrafast electric bus charging station has begun operating at the Chongqing International Airport New Development Zone in China, where bus commuter traffic usually exceeds 4 million rides per day, the company says. The charging station has six 400kW individual chargers; each charger fills the bus battery in five to 10 minutes, functioning like a conventional gas station as opposed to a typical â€śPark & Chargeâ€ť charging station.
All 200 Citroen C-Zero battery-electric cars (pictured) sold out in 24 hours, Technologic Vehicles writes. The French automaker leased the C-Zero for â‚¬90 ($112) for 23 months, with 20,000 kilometers included.
