Contract Wins: IBM, Diageo and GE, Defense and Eneref, MeterSense

The city of South Bend, Indiana, is working with IBM to apply intelligence to its wastewater management system. The city anticipates that the installation of a management system for a combined sewer overflow system will result in savings of $120 million in infrastructure investments, while avoiding costly fines assessed for overflows.

IBM is also working with Lyon, France, to create a model for sustainable transport that will coordinate buses, trams, metro and road traffic across the city. Lyon hopes that the project will improve traffic conditions, reduce operational costs and increase the number of people using public transport.

Madison Water Utility has selected MeterSense, Harris Utilities’ data management product, for the Wisconsin city’s water data-collection and analysis needs. The utility will introduce MeterSense in conjunction with Itron’s advanced metering infrastructure.

Beverage company Diageo is installing two GE Jenbacher combined heat and power units at its Guiness breweries in Ogba and Benin City, Nigeria. The two, 3.3 MW CHP plants will each feature a natural gas-powered Jenbacher J620 gas engine and a backup diesel engine from a different supplier.

The Department of Defense is working with sustainability research and advocacy group Eneref Institute on a solar heating project. Eneref is to provide accurate guidance on equipment specifications, contractor qualifications, third party finance and monitoring practices in order to build a greater confidence for solar heating technology within the department. The goal is to provide enough information to expedite solar heating and cooling at Defense facilities worldwide.

The Pentagon has also approved cleantech engine developer Cyclone Power Technologies as its prime contractor under its engine development program with the U.S. Army / Tank Command. The program objective is to develop a Phase I prototype 10kW auxiliary power unit, suitable for use in multiple lines of combat vehicles including the M1 Abrams tank, the IAV Stryker and the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. The contract is valued at approximately $1.4 million, which is scheduled to be paid to Cyclone over the next 12 months as the company reaches certain development milestones.
