Contract Wins: GM Holden and Better Place, GE, CH2M Hill Water Partnership
GM Holden has selected Better Place as its preferred partner for renewable energy and faster charging solutions for the long-range Holden Volt electric car (see photo), which goes on sale in Australia later this year. Better Place will develop a number of membership packages for Volt customers, including the installation of a Charge Spot unit, which can charge a Volt in under four hours. Better Place also will offer zero-emissions charging provided through the purchase of 100 percent government-certified renewable energy certificates.
Envision Charlotte, a public-private partnership that aims to reduce energy consumption 20 percent in the city’s uptown business district by 2016, has added a water measurement and efficiency component. Smart Water Now, which will be managed by CH2M Hill, seeks to reduce water use 20 percent over the same time frame. Itron will provide water communication modules, the network infrastructure, cloud services and data aggregation. Verizon will gather the water use data from a network of machine-to-machine devices and transport near real-time information to kiosks using its 4g LTE network. Siemens is providing project support.
General Electric and Singapore-based Memsys Clearwater have agreed to jointly develop membrane distillation technology for the unconventional resources market, including shale gas, coal seam gas and other unconventional fuels recovered by hydraulic fracturing. GE will invest in testing the technology, and in return will receive an exclusive license for its use in these applications.
Utility Systems Solutions (US2) was awarded a $669,000 contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, Ala., to thermally repair 1,452 feet of concrete trenches housing a significant portion of the campus’s steam-delivery system. The system, which includes steam or condensate piping and steam traps, are located in trenches between nine buildings at the VA medical campus. The VA’s goal is to reduce heat loss and save energy, while prolonging the life of the buried pipeline system.
