IBM, Accenture Top Best Corporate Citizens in Government Contracting List
Merck & Co., UPS, Lockheed Martin Corp., Verizon Communications and Boeing rounded out the top 10 in the list of 40 companies. Meanwhile, Huntington Ingalls Industries, L-3 Communications Holdings, Shaw Group, Booz Allen Hamilton and Oshkosh Corp. were at the bottom of the top 40.
CR focused on the largest US firms as listed in the Russell 1000 and then used its methodology to rank contractors based on 318 data elements in seven weighted categories: climate change, employee relations, environment, financial, governance, human rights and philanthropy. Forty companies were included in the best corporate citizens in government contracting list. However, for each category, CR Magazine ranked all companies within the Russell 1000.
CR ranked IBM as the best company in the environment category. IBM was ranked sixth in climate change, 42nd in human rights, 89th in employee relations, 197th in corporate governance, 12th in philanthropy and 98th in the financial category.
UPS, which was seventh overall, received the highest rank in the climate change category. The global delivery company was ranked seventh in the environmental category. Hewlett-Packard, which was third overall, was ranked fourth in the environmental and 19th in the climate change categories.
The list, now in its third year, aims to highlight the reporting practices of the largest government contractors and demonstrates the increasing focus of most of these companies on improving transparency, said CR Magazine editor-in-chief Dirk Olin.
CR Magazine research found that overall disclosure performance improved five percent over the prior year. Three-year average returns to shareholders among the highest-ranked companies outpaced the rest of the list by more than 50 percent, demonstrating the financial benefits of transparency.
Bristol-Myers Squibb is ranked no. 1 on CR Magazine’s list of 100 Best Corporate Citizens 2012, which was released earlier this year, followed by IBM, Microsoft, Intel and Johnson Controls.
