Honda Reports Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG Emissions
Honda says it has become the world’s first “mobility company” to disclose estimates of all GHGs related to the firm, stating total Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions of 225.06 million tons CO2e for the fiscal year that ended March 31.
Honda has been disclosing all Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions since 2009, and disclosed a part of Scope 3 emissions for the first time on June 20. All of Honda’s estimates have been calculated in conformity with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the company says.
Honda has also disclosed for the first time data it used to calculate Scope 3 emissions, including customers’ lifetime product use and annual traveling distance, but this information is only available in Japanese.
The company’s Scope 1 emissions totaled 1.24 million tons of CO2e during the fiscal year ending March 31, Honda reported. Scope 1 emissions include direct emissions from operations that Honda owns or controls, such as emissions from combustion of fuel oil at factories and from corporate vehicles.
Honda’s indirect Scope 2 emissions, from sources including electricity use at factories and offices, were 2.96 million tons of CO2e during the same time period.
The company’s Scope 3 emissions from all indirect sources totaled 220.86 million tons of CO2e. The majority of Scope 3 emissions were category 11, which includes emissions from customer use (see chart, above). Honda’s Scope 3 emissions also come from purchased goods and services, upstream transportation and distribution, waste generated, business travel and other categories.
Last year Honda met its 2010 goal of a 20 percent cut to CO2 from power equipment production from 2000 levels, with a 27.2 percent drop, according to its 2011 North American environmental report.
In July 2011, the car company said it achieved zero waste to landfill status at 10 of its 14 plants in North America, with the remaining plants achieving a “virtually zero” level.
