VW to Reduce CO2 Emissions to 95 g/km by 2020
The automaker says it’s the first to commit to this target.
Previously, Volkswagen had set a target of reducing the CO2 emissions of its European new vehicle fleet to less than 120 grams per kilometer by 2015. The chairman of the board of management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, Dr. Martin Winterkorn, says the automaker is on track to meet this goal, adding that increasingly efficient technologies, powertrains and vehicles, and environmentally sustainable production, would account for more than two-thirds of VW’s total investment of €50.2 billion ($65.4 billion) planned up to 2015.
The Volkswagen Group offers 245 model variants with emissions of less than 120 grams CO2 per kilometer, over 60 percent more than two years ago, the automaker says. Thirty-six model variants have emissions below 100 grams CO2 per kilometer, almost 40 percent more than in 2011. VW’s 1-liter car, the XL1, has a fuel consumption of 0.83 liters and 21 grams CO2 per kilometer.
The company says it’s also making progress toward its target of making all 100 VW production facilities throughout the world 25 percent more environmentally sustainable by 2018. It says is has cut energy and water consumption, waste production, and CO2 and solvent emissions, on average, 10 percent per vehicle over the past two years.
Last year, Pike Research named Volkswagen Group the leading vendor in the clean diesel vehicle market.
In January, Volkswagen opened a solar park on 33 acres adjacent to its LEED Platinum manufacturing plant in Chattanooga, Tenn. The 9.5 MW solar park contains 33,600 solar modules from JA Solar, designed to produce 13.1 GWh of electricity per year.
