UN Global Compact, GRI Renew Partnership
The two organizations, which signed the memorandum of understanding today at the GRI’s 2013 Global Conference in Amsterdam, say they will continue to work together to provide companies guidance on how to link sustainability disclosure to potential sustainable development goals.
The renewed partnership also marks the beginning of new areas of cooperation, the groups say. The UN Global Compact and GRI plan to work together on the post-2015 UN development agenda.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has asked the Global Compact to contribute to the post-2015 development process by consulting with its network of more than 7,000 companies to help define the role of the business community.
The plan for how this will be implemented will be unveiled in September at the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit. The architecture will address the importance of corporate transparency and accountability, and link to the role of corporate sustainability reporting for which GRI provides the most widely used guidance.
The GRI produces a sustainability reporting framework used by companies worldwide to allow for greater organizational transparency. The framework, including the reporting guidelines, sets out the principles and indicators organizations can use to report their economic, environmental and social performance.
The GRI released G4, the latest version of its sustainability reporting guidelines, earlier this week at the conference. Revisions to the guidelines will help businesses generate material sustainability information in integrated reports, GRI says.
G4 is more “user-friendly” and accessible for those new to sustainability reporting, GRI says. It’s also synced with other global frameworks including the OECD MNE Guidelines, the United Nations Global Compact Principles and the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
