Standards & Compliance Briefing: FTC Forestry Complaint, Grocery Stewardship, ISO 14001
Environmental groupÂ ForestEthics filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, asking the agency to investigate the Sustainable Forestry Initiative under the terms of the FTC Green Guides. ForestEthics says SFIâ€™s claim to be an independent, non-profit public charity is deceptive because the initiative is substantially governed and financed by the timber industry. The environmental group says more than 2,800 individuals have filed their own complaints against SFI with the FTC.
Hannaford Supermarkets has enrolled 93 stores in the Grocery Stewardship Certification run by theÂ Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences. GSC, which the center describes as the nation’sÂ only supermarket sustainability certification, kicked off with a pilot program last September. The center saysÂ that a 12-store district in the GSC can expect to save 3.6 million gallons of water, 2 million kWh of electricity, 12 million pounds of solid waste and 103 millions pounds of GHGs per year.
Associated Builders and Contractors has named Rush Construction as a Certified Green Contractor. The certificationÂ process requires a third-party onsite assessment, and involves a list of 12 prerequisites ranging from distributing documents electronically to establishing an aggressive recycling program. Companies are required to fulfill 12 of 36 elective items that include conducting a professional energy audit, water conservation efforts and providing incentives for carpooling or using public transportation.
Northrop Grumman Corporation’s Europe-based air traffic management systems subsidiary, Northrop Grumman Park Air Systems, has received ISO 14001 environmental management system accreditation fromÂ Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance. The company’s facility nearÂ Peterborough, U.K. uses a rainwater harvesting system as its primary water source for operations, and has adopted a zero waste to landfill program.Â
Unifi Manufacturing has earned Responsible Source recycled textile certification for its Repreve products, made from pre- and post-consumer recycled polyethylene terephthalate atÂ the Repreve Recycling Center inÂ Yadkinville, N.C. The standard, developed by SCS Global Services,Â addresses supply chain and manufacturing issues including regulatory compliance, fair labor practices and environmental life cycle impacts.Â
Wilsonart has achieved ISO 14001 environmental management and OHSAS 18001 health and safety certification for its US manufacturing plants, inÂ Temple, Texas and Fletcher, N.C. The company makes and distributesÂ high-pressure laminates and other surfaces for furniture, countertops and other applications.
Dubai Aluminium’s Power and Desalination Plant has achieved ISO 50001 energy management system certification. The plant’s initiatives includeÂ evaporative cooling, outage optimisation and compressed air enhancement, and hot gases from the power plant are used to drive the desalination facility.Â
Glen Raven Custom Fabrics says more than 35 patterns in its Sunbrella Contract fabric line are now Silver-certified under theÂ NSF/ANSI 336 standard, which assesses sustainability issues includingÂ fabric sourcing, water consumption and quality, energy use, recycling, air quality and material safety. The company first declared compliance for two fabrics in 2012, Casual Living reports.
