The 18,000 sq ft Maximum Building Energy Efficiency Research Laboratory at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee has received LEED Gold certification, World Interior Design Network reports. Researchers will use Maxlab to test building wall efficiency and durability, as well as research heating and cooling systems, according to WATE. Features contributing to the building’s own LEED certification include a rainwater harvest tank, cool roof, aluminum sunshades, motion sensors, use of day-lighting in interior lab space, and individual thermostats in each office.
Sri Lankan five-star hotel chain Heritance Hotels, owned and managed by Aitken Spence Hotels, has achieved ISO 50001 energy management system certification, Travel Daily News reports. The company uses biomass gasifiers at several resorts, and all its locations have replaced incandescent lighting with CFL and LED lights.
Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands says it has become the first event and conference venue outside the US to achieve Level One Certification under the ASTM Standard for Evaluation and Selection of Venues for Environmentally Sustainable Meetings, Events, Trade Shows, and Conferences, Incentive Travel reports. The standard specifies criteria for air quality, energy, water, waste, staff management, communications and procurement.
Chattanooga’s public utility, EPB, has achieved LEED certification for its existing headquarters in the city’s downtown. The refit project has a 12-month return on investment and will save $180,000 a year, Nooga.com reported.
The Hampton Inn Evansville Airport in Indiana has achieved LEED certification. Features include a cool roof, native plants, proximity to public transit, and an in-room energy management system that automatically powers down air conditioning when rooms are empty.
Sioux Falls Bargain Bytes has achieved e-Stewards Certification. The company works with e-waste generators including municipalities and large businesses, and is an authorized Microsoft Refurbisher.
Biodiesel of Las Vegas has received BQ-9000 certification of its quality control process from the National Biodiesel Board. The board’s accreditation combines the quality standard for biodiesel, ASTM D6751, with a quality systems program that includes storage, sampling, testing, blending, shipping, distribution, and fuel management practices.
Portland’s New Seasons Market says it is the first grocer to achieve B Corp certification, Sustainable Business Oregon reports. The company scored 121 points out of 200 – 24 points higher than the average B Corp company – on the B Corp questionnaire, which examines practices, governance, environmental and community impacts, staff benefits and culture.
