Unilever Opens Sustainable Ice Cream Factory
The facility in Konya, Turkey (pictured) will be the model for all future Heartbrand factories around the world. Unilever’s Heartbrand products include ice cream brands Magnum, Cornetto, Solero, Vienetta and Carte d’Or.
Unilever is pursuing LEED certification for the facility, making it the first of the company’s 35 ice cream factories to meet such a standard. The factory also is designed to be a zero-non-hazardous waste-to-landfill facility.
The factory fits into Unilever’s business model, which centers on sustainability, the company says. The company’s so-called Sustainable Living Plan, created in 2010, outlines 50 targets to reach by 2020, including halving greenhouse gas emissions and water use associated with the consumer use of its products. The plan also aims to reduce water use and greenhouse gas emissions generated in the manufacturing process.
Earlier this month, Unilever launched a crowdsourcing campaign to design an environmentally friendly shower shower that uses less water and has a smaller carbon footprint than current models.
Unilever will award €10,000 ($13,000) and a trip to London to develop the winning idea. Submissions for the “shower of the future” competition need to be cost efficient and affordable to the end user, have an innovative design that fits within a typical modern bathroom and should use no more than 10 liters (2.6 gallons) of water in a single use.
In July, Unilever was chosen as one of the 2013 winners of 2degrees Sustainability Champions Awards, an annual program that recognizes success in the execution of sustainability initiatives.
Unilever won the supply chain category for its efforts to redesign and improve its distribution network for homecare, personal care and food products in the UK and Ireland.
