The 2013 Dow Jones Sustainability Indices, released today by Swiss-based investment firm RobecoSAM and S&P Dow Jones Indices, tracks the financial performance of leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide.

RobecoSAM invited the world’s 2,500 largest companies, based on free-float market capitalization, from 59 industries to report annually on their sustainability performance. RobecoSAM then carried out a corporate sustainability assessment — an in-depth analysis of economic, environmental and social criteria — for each participating company and identified the top company in each of the 24 industry groups derived from 59 industries.

Other companies that led their industry group in sustainability includes pharmaceutical company Roche Holding, Lotte Shopping, utility EDP, telecommunications services business KT Corp and Woolworths (see graphic).

This year, DJSI added 39 companies including Bank of America, UBS and United Parcel Service, and deleted 47 businesses such as Johnson & Johnson and HSBC Holdings.

Other large deletions this year include pharmaceutical company Bayer, Lloyds Banking Group, Zurich Insurance Group, UK-based IMI nad France’s Lafarge.

Last year, BMW, chemical company Akzo Nobel, Unilever, Roche Holding, Siemens and Spanish utility Iberdrola were among the top companies in their respective industry groups.

In 2012, Dow Jones Sustainability Indices added Exxon, Microsoft, Canadian National Railway, Target, retailer H&M, oil and gas companies Baker Hughes and Cenovus Energy and chemical maker Linde.  Hewlett Packard, which had been dropped from the index was also added back in 2012.

IBM, GlaxoSmithKline and United Technologies were among those dropped from the DJSI last year.
