Standards & Compliance Briefing: Electrical Equipment, ANSI Cities Workshop, LEED
The Professional Electrical Apparatus Recyclers League (PEARL) has been approved by the American National Standards Institute as an ANSI Accredited Standards Developer. PEARL is aiming to promote a single set of consensus technical standards for reconditioning electrical equipment used in industrial and commercial installations.
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) will host a workshop on November 21 in Washington, DC, to explore how standards and conformance can help achieve smart, sustainable, and resilient cities. The workshop will include discussion of priority areas for standards development related to smart cities, as well as standardization activities by the International Organization for Standardization, the International Electrotechnical Commission, the International Telecommunication Union and others.
Boston University‘s $65 million, 120,000-plus sq ft Center for Student Services has achieved LEED Gold certification. The facility is designed to avoid thermal by-passes, prevent vapor migration that can cause mold, and control moisture penetration, the university says.
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Art and Design Building has earned LEED Gold. A $9 million, 29,000 sq ft addition to the building, including art gallery, offices, studio space and classrooms, opened in March, the Edwardsville Intelligencer reports. The university said the building uses almost 28 percent less energy than a comparable structure and nearly 95 percent of all construction waste was recycled or reused.
Colorado Springs’ new 12,000-square-foot fire station has earned LEED Platinum certification. The facility includes on-site cleaning for shower and laundry grey water, allowing the water to be re-used for a community garden; and bathroom tiles have a nano-coating to kill bacteria, Fire Chief reports.
Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates in Dubai has achieved LEED Silver for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance. Johnson Controls helped facilitate environmental projects for hotel manager Majid Al Futaim. The changes last year cut the hotel’s energy and water use by 9 percent, MAF says.
