Standards & Compliance Briefing: Grocery Stewardship, LEED, REDD+ Project
The Grocery Stewardship Certification (GSC) expanded beyond its pilot stage recently with the addition of four new stores in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The GSC recognizes stores for reducing energy consumption, water use, food waste and other related measures.
Cox Enterprises achieved LEED Gold certification for a 600,000 square foot facility on its corporate campus in Sandy Springs, Ga. The facility features a solar canopy, EV charging, shuttles to public transportation and a 15,000 gallon underground cistern that eliminates potable water use for irrigation. Cox also repurposes food and paper waste from the site’s dining facility into a soil amendment used for landscaping.
VWR International, a global provider of laboratory supplies, equipment and services, has received LEED Silver certification for its West Coast Distribution Center in Visalia, Calif. The company recycled 94 percent of all construction waste and installed energy efficient lights with motion sensors.
Terra Global Capital’s Oddar Meanchey REDD+ Project in Cambodia is the first project in the world to earn the verified “Triple Gold” distinction under the Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) Standards. This certification by SCS Global Services, under both the CCB Standards and the Verified Carbon Standard, demonstrates that the project delivers an elevated level of community, biodiversity and climate adaptation benefits paired with robust emissions accounting practices.
UltraViolet Devices has earned ISO 14001 environmental management system certification. The manufacturer and supplier of UV products for air, surface and water disinfection also is certified to the ISO 9001 quality management systems standard.
Semiconductor company STMicroelectronics announced that all six of its silicon chip manufacturing sites – two in Italy, three in France and one in Singapore – have achieved certification to the ISO 50001 energy-management standard. The certification process involved developing tools to systematically measure the energy consumption of each piece of equipment, including chillers and compressed dry-air equipment, and analyze the sites’ overall energy usage. ST estimates that this will contribute to saving 14 GWh of energy and $2 million in 2013-2014.
