Standards & Compliance Briefing: Butanol, Whirlpool, PAS 141
ASTM International has published ASTM D7862-13, Specification for Butanol for Blending with Gasoline for Use as Automotive Spark-Ignition Engine Fuel. The standard covers butanol that is intended to be blended with gasoline at 1 to 12.5 volume percent, establishing performance requirements and test methods for butanol content, water content, acidity, inorganic chloride, solvent-washed gum, sulfur content and total sulfate. The standard will further commercialization of this renewable fuel, according to Glenn Johnson, executive vice president of regulatory affairs at Gevo, and a member of the subcommittee that developed the standard.
Whirlpool Corporation’s 1.5 million sq ft cooking appliance factory, testing lab and distribution center in Cleveland, Tennessee has achieved LEED Gold certification. The facility features reflecting roofing materials and pavement, FSC-certified wood, low-VOC paints and caulks, low-flow plumbing, rainwater reuse for irrigation, and designated parking for fuel-efficient vehicles and carpoolers.
Interxion’s MAD2 facility is the first data centre in Spain to obtain LEED Gold certification, according to Arup, which set out the sustainability strategy for the building’s construction. The data centre was built to cope with a high-density environment and was designed using energy-efficient modular architecture, including free-cooling and application of maximum efficiency management standards.
Valpak has appointed Really Green Credentials as the second organization allowed to issue PAS 141 accreditation, for treatment facilities that follow best practices in preparing electrical goods for reuse. The first accreditation body was Oakdene Hollins. PAS 141 was created to make it easier for regulators to identify illegal WEEE exports, Lets Recycle reports.
NCFI Polyurethanes has earned recognition under the EPA Seal and Insulate program for two of its products (ESR-1154 and ESR-1615). The program requires reporting of thermal resistance and surface-burning characteristics that establish compliance with the requirements of the International Residential Code and International Energy Conservation Code.
