Standards & Compliance Briefing: Samsung’s ISO 50001, CSX’s LEED, WhiteWave
Samsung Electronics has received ISO 50001 energy management certification for all sites worldwide. The company’s Gumi, South Korea site was the first to receive certification, in July 2011. Samsung has cut GHG emissions 57 percent since 2008, and plans further reductions by minimizing energy waste.
SCS Global Services has verified Fruit of the Loom’s 2012 North American carbon footprint against the ISO 14064-3 and ISO 14065 standards and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. The total 2012 footprint included emissions from stationary combustion of fossil fuels, refrigerant and chemical consumption, transportation, and purchased electricity. The company plans a 40 percent cut in electricity-related GHG emissions by 2015.
WhiteWave Foods, makers of Silk, Horizon Organics, International Delight and Land O Lakes products, now sources 100 percent of its palm oil according to rules set by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil. WhiteWave has been a member of the RSPO since 2010.
Developer The Tower Companies and construction firm the Lenkin Company announced that 1050 K Street, a 136,000 sq ft, 11-story commercial office building in Washington, DC, has been certified LEED – Platinum, Existing Buildings. The building previously achieved LEED Gold for Core and Shell. The companies say the building achieved Platinum based on its energy and water efficiency, proximity to public transit, and purchase of RECs for 100 percent of energy consumption. It uses a heat recovery wheel to capture energy in exhaust air and precondition fresh air supplies.
CSX Corporation has achieved LEED – Existing Buildings certification for its corporate headquarters in Jacksonville, Fla. The company has invested several hundred thousand dollars to upgrade the 485,000 sq ft building, built in 1959, with upgrades to HVAC, lighting and plumbing, and installation of a white roof.
The Westin Birmingham Hotel in Alabama has received LEED Silver certification, AL.com reports. The hotel has 294 rooms and 7,000 sq ft of meeting and banquet space.
