AB InBev’s Magor Brewery to Save 289 Metric Tons of CO2
Anheuser-Busch InBev’s new warehouse at its Magor Brewery in Wales will eliminate the need for 330,00 kilometers (about 205,000 miles) of truck journeys required to transfer goods between external warehouses and the brewery during 2013-14, saving an estimated 289 metric tons of CO2, the company says.
The new facility, which opened last week, will allow AB InBev UK to reduce its environmental impact, the company says, and is an important next step in Magor Brewery’s ongoing efforts to help AB InBev achieve its global environmental performance targets.
The company has invested millions of pounds over several years at the brewery, which has helped to increase its recycling rate to 99.8 percent and reduce CO2 emissions per hectoliter of production by 23.3 percent, AB InBev says.
Since the start of 2011, more than 6 million hectoliters of water have been saved at the brewery. The onsite environmental committee — a team of employees at the brewery who work to find new ways to be a sustainable business — has driven employee-led changes and introduced new innovations to help the brewery reduce its environmental impact.
Prince Charles recognized AB InBev UK’s work to reduce water and waste at his November 2011 visit to Magor Brewery. During his visit, the Prince of Wales met members of the brewery’s environment committee and saw how energy reduction methods have been implemented throughout the site, with a focus on high-energy areas such as refrigeration and the packaging lines.
Magor Brewery’s energy reduction program will help AB InBev achieve its seven global environment goals, announced in June, across recycling, carbon reduction and water saving projects, the company says. AB InBev aims to reach these goals, which are shared across 24 countries, by the end of 2017.
