Coke, Ford Fuel Sustainable Design
The fabric, made from Coke’s PlantBottle Technology consists of up to 30 percent plant-based materials and covers seat cushions, seat backs, head restraints, door panel inserts and headliners.
The Ford research vehicle marks the first time the Coca-Cola technology is applied beyond PET packaging, which the companies say shows the potential of renewable materials to replace petroleum and other fossil fuels used for traditional PET fabric. If PlantBottle interior fabrics were used across the majority of US Ford models, it would displace about 4 million pounds of petroleum-derived materials, as well as save the equivalent of 295,000 gallons of gasoline and 6,000 barrels of oil, the companies say.
In August Ford added rice hulls to the list of sustainable materials used to build its F-150 truck. The truck already uses recycled cotton, recycled carpet, recycled plastic soda and water bottles and soybeans, among others.
