Standards & Compliance Briefing: Water Treatment, Smart Grid, LEED
Three Water Quality Association standards will be promoted and advanced for recognition as consensus American National Standards by ANSI: WQA/ASPE 1201: Electrochemical Drinking Water Treatment Systems; WQA/ASPE S802: Product Sustainability for Activated Carbon; and WQA/ASPE S803: Product Sustainability for Activated Carbon Water Filtration Systems. The American Society of Plumbing Engineers is sponsoring the standards.
IEEE has approved the IEEE 1901.2 Standard for Low-Frequency (less than 500kHz) Narrowband Power-Line Communications for Smart-Grid Applications. IEEE says the standard supports the balanced and efficient use of the power-line communications channel by all classes of low-frequency and narrowband devices. The standard is scheduled to be published December 6.
The Department of Energy has issued a final determination classifying UL Verification Services as a nationally recognized certification program for small electric motors, under 10 CFR 431.447 and 431.448. The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) had earlier cited several concerns regarding UL’s petition for recognition.
The National Nuclear Security Administration‘s 1.5 million sq ft National Security Campus in Kansas City, Mo., has been awarded LEED Gold. The facility includes manufacturing, laboratory, warehouse and office space.
Nashville’s 21,500 sq ft Bridge Building is the world’s highest-rated LEED Platinum Core & Shell structure, having achieved 99 out of 110 possible points, according to EDC Magazine. The renovated 1908 building includes geo-exchange HVAC systems, a solar water heater, rainwater capture and reuse, and dedicated parking for fuel-efficient vehicles. Air conditioning condensate gets collected, and indicator lights tell occupants when outdoor conditions are right for opening windows.
