Invista, CPI to Develop Gas-Based, Biotech Process
Invista, whose brands include Lycra, Coolmax and Stainmaster, has partnered with the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) to develop new technologies to enable gas-fermentation-based processes for the production of industrial chemicals.
Invista says biotechnology can improve the cost and availability of several chemicals and raw materials that are used to produce its current products. Gas fermentation is a “key enabling technology” that will allow the company to use gas feedstocks such as waste industrial gases, says Warren Primeaux, president of Invista Intermediates.
CPI, a UK-based technology innovation center, uses applied knowledge in science and engineering to enable its clients to develop, prove, prototype and scale up next-generation products and processes.
Earlier this year Invista, one of the world’s largest integrated producers of polymers and fibers, joined the Sustainable Apparel Coalition.
This month the New York City Economic Development Corporation partnered with Celgene, GE Ventures and Eli Lilly to create a biotech fund called the Life Sciences Funding Initiative. The partnership will deploy a minimum of $100 million and seek to launch 15 to 20 biotech ventures by 2020.
