Google Ranks Sixth for Green Power Purchases
Google has debuted at No. 6 in the EPA’s Green Power Partner rankings of the top clean electricity purchasers in the nation.
The tech company uses more than 737 million kilowatt-hours of green power a year, or 32 percent of its total electricity use, most supplied by two 20-year bundled power purchase agreements.
Google has committed more than $1 billion to 15 renewable energy projects. As of September 2013, the company had signed five long-term agreements for more than 570 MW of wind energy, and in late December it finalized an agreement to invest $75 million in the 182 MW Panhandle 2 wind farm in Carson County, outside of Amarillo. The company also uses biogas and solar.
Other new companies on the Top 100 list include Steelcase and Samsung. Levi Strauss has debuted on the Top 30 retail list.
Takeaway: Google’s array of renewable energy investments has placed it among the nation’s top purchasers of clean electricity.
