yellowpageYellowPagesUnited.org has launched a website to promote its advocacy of an opt-in system for the delivery of phone books instead of the traditional delivery door-to-door.

YellowPagesUnited.org says it was created to provide a central hub for both consumers and publishers who support opt-in delivery system and provide information about the impact that printed directories have on natural resources.

The organization says recent surveys indicate that only three out of 10 people who receive a printed phone book use it. Use of printed phone books is expected to further decline as Internet or mobile devices are used to locate businesses and information, it said.

An estimated 500 million phone directories are distributed by publishers each year, with hundreds of millions of those destined for landfills or recycling centers. More than a billion pounds of paper and seven million barrels of oil are needed to produce the books, it adds. Attempts to ban Yellow Pages book distribution have had various levels of success.

Currently, consumers can opt out of some phone directory deliveries at YellowPagesOptOut.com.
