Standards & Compliance Briefing: Kodak’s ISO 50001, ASHRAE Refrigeration Guide, LEED
Kodak‘s Osterode, Germany manufacturing plant has achieved the ISO 50001 energy management standard, with certification by UL DQS. Kodak recently announced that the plant would be expanding capacity to meet demand for Kodak Sonora Process Free Plates, which the company says are more sustainable because they completely remove the chemical processing step for plate making.
The 84,000 sq ft Golisano Institute for Sustainability building at Rochester Institute of Technology earned LEED Platinum. The facility is powered by a fuel cell, solar panels and wind turbines, and has used only about a third of the electricity it generated over the past year, with the rest fed into the campus grid for use by other facilities. Rainwater capture, using a 1,700-gallon tank in the basement, has met more than half the building’s water needs, the Democrat and Chronicle reports.
ASHRAE has published the Refrigeration Commissioning Guide for Commercial and Industrial Systems, developed in cooperation with the Department of Energy. Using this guide will help achieve cost-effective and cost-efficient refrigeration systems for new projects, expansions, remodels, and existing systems that simply need a tune-up, the organization says. The guide is available for free download.
The new US Embassy building in Bujumbura, Burundi became the first facility in that country to receive LEED Gold certification. The building features 960 solar panels, architectural shading, a white roof, LED lighting, occupancy sensors, electric traction elevators and variable frequency drives for pumps, fans, and motors. All water is treated on-site and reused for irrigation.
Ambler Johnston Hall at Virginia Tech has earned LEED Gold status, bringing the university’s number of LEED-certified facilities to eight. The building features covered bicycle racks, low-emitting adhesives and paints, and regionally manufactured building materials, the Roanoke Times reported.
ASTM has released ASTM C1534-14, Standard Specification for Flexible Polymeric Foam Sheet Insulation Used as a Thermal and Sound Absorbing Liner for Duct Systems.
ASTM has published D6008-96(2014), Standard Practice for Conducting Environmental Baseline Surveys, which is designed for use on Department of Defense projects. The practice is intended for use by environmental professionals to facilitate EBS efforts, and by preparers and reviewers of environmental condition of property maps and EBS reports.
