Coke Builds $100M Green Beverage Plant

Coke bottlesCoca-Cola has begun construction of its green plant in China’s South Harbin Industrial City.

The $100 million plant is designed to accommodate nine production lines for both sparkling and still beverages, including Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fanta, Minute Maid and Ice Dew. Upon completion, the facility is expected to deliver an annual production capacity of 1.2 million tons of beverages. The first phase of the new plant will be operational in 2016.

Following the concept of green plant, green operation and green office, the new Coca-Cola Heilongjiang plant adopts green building standards in various aspects from site selection, building environment, water-saving, energy-saving, air protection, material and resource utilization, indoor environment quality and design innovation. The company didn’t provide specific metrics for its green building initiatives.

Coke says the plant will seek LEED Silver certification.

Earlier this month, Coke and its bottling partners announced they are on track to meet their 2020 water replenishment goal by balancing an estimated 68 percent of the water used in their finished beverages based on 2013 sales volume.
