ISO is revising one of its most widely used environmental management standards, ISO 14001, and the draft is available for public comment.

The main changes in the new draft are a greater focus on risk management and a shift towards improving environmental performance rather than the management system itself. More information about the changes and the process can be found on the ISO 14001 revision page.

Martin Baxter, executive director – policy & engagement at the UK’s Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment, says the proposed changes “will mean organizations need to focus on building environment into the core of their business.”

Like all ISO standards, ISO 14001 is reviewed every five years to ensure it is relevant and up-to-date. By moving to the Draft International Standard (DIS) stage, the new draft version is now open to public comment as well as purchase, giving companies a preview of the changes and allowing them to prepare for when the final standard is published at the end of 2015.
