Green Fleet Roundup: Time Warner Cable, Wamart, Plug Power, Clean Energy Fuels
Time Warner Cable is joining the Department of Energyâs Clean Citiesâ National Clean Fleet Partnership to further reduce petroleum use and increase efficiencies within its fleet (pictured) of more than 20,000 service trucks and vehicles. TWCâs participation is part of the companyâs âGo Greenâ initiative under which TWC is on track to meet or exceed a 15 percent reduction in 2012 total carbon intensity by the end of 2014.
Walmart has extended its commitment to Plug Power hydrogen fuel cells with a follow-on order that adds a seventh GenKey site to its original six-site contract. This additional site in Sterling, Ill. consists of 286 GenDrive fuel cell units and is planned to deploy in the third quarter of 2014.
Clean Energy Fuels opened 27 natural gas fueling stations in the first half of the year, nine of which are truck-friendly Americaâs Natural Gas Highway stations. The company also upgraded equipment and added compression capacity to 10 existing stations to keep pace with growing natural gas fuel demand.
Ford, American Honda, BMW, Chrysler, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America, Mitsubishi Motors North America and Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America are collaborating with 15 US utility companies to develop technology for plug-in electric vehicles to talk to the utilities via the cloud â a move that would help manage energy use and improve the efficiency of the power grid. The pilot program will create a standards-based communications platform for use by plug-in electric vehicles and the electric grids.
Transit bus operators in North America can now employ engine stop/start technology to shut off bus engines as passengers board and disembark, reducing air and noise pollution as well as fuel consumption. This advancement, the result of collaboration between BAE Systems and Cummins, is now available for all buses equipped with Cummins ISB6.7 Hybrid engines and BAE Systemsâ HybriDrive Series-E propulsion systems.
