Ford plans to release a new hybrid vehicle in 2018 to compete against the Toyota Prius and help the Detroit automaker meet federal mileage standards, according to media reports.
The Ford hybrid, beginning as a 2019 model-year car, could eventually be offered with several different body styles and different versions of the car’s gasoline-elecrtic drivetrain, according to Reuters, which quotes sources with knowledge of Ford’s future plans.
Analysts tell the Detroit News that Ford will produce about 90,000 to 100,000 of the vehicles annually.
The hybrid car will also help Ford reach the US corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standard, which require automakers to raise average fuel economy to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025.
Jeff Schuster, LMC Automotive’s senior vice president, Americas region and global vehicle, told The Detroit News in an interview that the hybrid is “definitely a move toward the CAFE end game.”
