NespressoNestle’s Nespresso coffee brand has pledged to become carbon neutral by 2020.

The commitment is one of several new sustainability initiatives, part of a 500 million Swiss francs ($547 million) program called The Positive Cup.

Nespresso says it will invest the money over the next six years to shrink its environmental footprint. Part of this investment will be used to establish a new Sustainable Development Fund.

The Positive Cup commitments to achieve by 2020 include:

  • Source 100 percent of its permanent range of Grand Cru coffees sustainably through the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality Program by expanding the AAA Program in Ethiopia, Kenya and South Sudan, and investing more than 15 million Swiss francs ($16 million) in these countries over six years.
  • Assist farmers to achieve high certification standards (in water management, biodiversity and fair treatment of workers, for example) through the Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade.
  • Expand the capacity to collect used aluminum capsules to 100 percent wherever the company does business and increase recycling rates.
  • Recycle Nespresso capsules collected by the company into new Nespresso capsules.
  • Source 100 percent of virgin aluminum capsule material compliant with the new Aluminum Stewardship Initiative standard, being developed within a multi-stakeholder program led by the IUCN.
  • Further reduce by 10 percent the carbon footprint of the company.
