ARKThe UK ministry of defense has selected Ark Data Centres to implement a data center at Corsham in Wiltshire that will reduce UK carbon by 14,000 metric tons over 10 years.

The carbon reduction will come from Ark’s G-Cloud formula that includes a fixed power efficiency rating.

The MOD is closing the existing host site in Bath as part of its ongoing program to cut costs and improve efficiency, and the site will be released to developers.

The new data center will support the delivery of ministry of defense IT services.

The center will be designed from the ground up, and will feature concurrently maintained mechanical and electrical plants alongside sensitive control of cooling and power. Ark’s operational procedures have been developed and tested to take account of any exceptional circumstances and designed and accredited to ISO 22301 standards.

Ark’s business continuity management system is designed to reduce the likelihood of, and fast recovery from, any disruptive incident leveraging the low latency diverse dark fiber connectivity between sites. Sitting in its own secure compound, each MOD data center location is shielded by physical protection in line with the MOD’s departmental regulations.

The MOD regulations are complemented by Ark’s technology and a risk management system, designed to the ISO 27001 information security management standard. Ark also delivers security per building rather than per site.

The total cost of ownership of the new data center in Corsham will be significantly lower when compared to the old site.

The new installation is in line with the goals of the Infrastructure Carbon Review released at the end of last year, which offered actions for UK government and businesses to take to reduce carbon emissions.

In 2011, the UK set out plans to cut carbon emissions in half by 2027, from 1990 levels.
