Freedom Industries Indicted for W.Va. Chemical Spill

Freedom Industries and six former Freedom officials have been charged with various federal crimes related to the January 2014 West Virginia chemical spill that left 300,000 people without drinking water, EHS Today reports.

The company itself is charged with the negligent discharge of a pollutant in violation of the Clean Water Act, negligent discharge of refuse matter in violation of the Refuse Act and violating an environmental permit.

Former company president Gary Southern faces 68 years in prison if convicted on all counts. Southern is charged with the negligent discharge of a pollutant in violation of the Clean Water Act, negligent discharge of refuse matter in violation of the Refuse Act, violating an environmental permit, bankruptcy fraud, mail fraud and wire fraud.

A preliminary economic assessment of the chemical spill put the cost to businesses at $61 million.
